AAI Labs Launches New 5G and AI Project for Public Transport Optimisation

March 14, 2024
2 min read

AAI Labs, together with Vilnius University, UAB “INNTEC”, Vilnius City Municipality and SĮ “Susisiekimo paslaugos” (JUDU), is launching an innovative project that will combine 5G technologies with artificial intelligence for public transport optimisation. The project has received funding from the European Union’s “NextGenerationEU” financial instrument.

About the project

Currently, there are no large-scale systems on the market that collect data from 5G access users, capture incidents using fixed and mobile cameras, and use the collected data to provide conclusions and recommendations. With the system we are building, we aim to:

  • Increase safety on city streets by detecting traffic violations in real time.
  • Respond faster to traffic incidents.
  • Forecast and reduce traffic congestion.
  • Optimise public transport routes and loads.
  • Increase the popularity of public transport.
  • Improve road infrastructure based on real data.
  • Reduce bus emissions and plan their maintenance.

Project implementation

The main goal of the project is to create a public transport optimisation and recommendation system based on 5G and artificial intelligence. The system will consist of four main components:

  • Fixed cameras: real-time recording of traffic incidents and violations.
  • Mobile cameras: road condition analysis, congestion forecasting and violation detection.
  • 5G connectivity distribution system: providing internet access at stops and on buses while collecting user data.
  • Telemetry data analysis: monitoring the technical condition and emissions of buses.

Project duration and results

The 22-month project will cover applied research and experimental development. During the project:

  • 5 fixed and 5 mobile 5G cameras will be installed.
  • 15 5G Wi-Fi routers will be installed at stops and on buses.
  • Artificial intelligence models for traffic analysis will be developed and trained.
  • The system will be tested under real conditions in the city of Vilnius.
  • Product prototypes and a pilot version will be prepared.

By the end of the project, we will have a working system that will be evaluated by users and operated under real conditions.

Long-term vision

This project will not only contribute to building a smarter Vilnius, but will also demonstrate how 5G and artificial intelligence can transform public transport. We hope the system we create will become a model for other cities in Lithuania and abroad seeking to manage traffic flows more effectively and improve residents’ quality of life.
