When AI Becomes a Sports Journalist
Artificial intelligence can do a lot these days. It can write code, generate recipes, analyze data and even create articles about sports matches. That’s exactly what we wanted: using an LLM-powered tool, we fed it detailed tennis match results and asked it to generate a match report.
And the result… was even better than we expected. Maybe even too good.
The AI wrote a detailed, engaging, and almost poetic article about a Wimbledon clash between Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. Every set was described, the momentum shifts, the tension in the tiebreaks - a true sports drama. But then came the unexpected twist: post-match interviews with both players.
Wait, what?
Yes, the AI decided that the lack of actual quotes wasn’t a problem. So it just... made them up:
"Rafa is an incredible competitor, and matches against him are always tough." Djokovic said. "I'm thrilled to have come through today. The atmosphere was amazing, and it's always special to play here at Wimbledon."
"It was a great match, and Novak played really well." Nadal said. "I gave it my all, but today he was the better player. Thank you to everyone who came out to support us. It's always an honor to play at Wimbledon."
Sounds real? Definitely. Professional? Absolutely. But... none of these quotes were actually ever said. The AI simply did what it does best - filled in the blanks with the most likely-sounding text.
And that’s where the charm and risk of AI comes in. It writes convincingly. Sometimes, too convincingly. Had we not known those interviews were fictional, we probably would have believed they were real. And that’s exactly why it’s crucial to understand where AI can act as a helpful assistant, and where a human editor is still very much needed.
The moral of the story? AI can be a great sports journalist, just make sure it didn’t “interview” Rafael Nadal without permission before you hit publish.
And that’s just one match. Imagine what would happen if we let AI be a journalist for an entire season… Though, come to think of it, maybe we’re not quite ready to have fictional press conferences at every game. At least not yet.
P.S. Were we mad at the AI? Not at all. We were actually a little impressed by its creativity. From now on, though, more human editing, fewer fantasy interviews. Unless, of course, we’re writing a sports novel.
P.P.S. Curious how the AI managed to “interview” Nadal? Here's the full piece - complete with the match, emotion, and entirely imagined post-match quotes:
